On Friday’s broadcast of HBO’s “Real Time,” host Bill Maher said that he’s never “thought life itself was particularly precious.” And “life is for the living. Until you’re born, you’re not living. I mean, yes, it’s becoming a life, but it’s not. And we wouldn’t miss you if you’re not born.” Maher stated, “Because it is a gut thing. I mean, we talk about the Constitution and laws and rights and it really just comes down to, do you like women or do you like babies? For me, I, personally, maybe this is an outlier attitude, I never have thought life itself was particularly precious. I don’t. I’m sorry, I don’t. … I really don’t. I mean — no, I’m serious. I think life is for the living. Until you’re born, you’re not living. I mean, yes, it’s becoming a life, but it’s not. And we wouldn’t miss you if you’re not born. Because we never knew you, you’re not going to miss anything. Because you never were born. I’m serious. It’s — so, that’s my [position]. I get that...
SANTA CLARA — Third-year wide receivers got traded in stunning spree midway through the NFL draft’s first round Thursday night. First, Marquise Brown, going from the Baltimore Ravens to the Arizona Cardinals. Then, A.J. Brown, from the Tennessee Titans to the Philadelphia Eagles. Next, Deebo Samuel, the one who openly opined for a trade? Not yet, and not likely as the draft unfolds pick by pick. When the draft opened just after 5 p.m., Samuel posted an Instagram video of him boarding a plane in Southern California. An hour later, it became apparent where he wouldn’t be going: to the New York Jets. If he can’t make it there, he can’t make it anywhere, right? In that first hour, the Jets used both their first-round picks, and neither was ticketed in a trade for Samuel. “You just don’t let guys like that walk. I can’t envision a scenario where we would,” general manager John Lynch said Monday about swapping Samuel off the 49ers’ playoff-caliber roster. Samuel’s plane touched down in Las Vegas, just as news broke of the deals for...

John Berman returned to CNN’s New Day on Monday equipped with the story of how running in the Boston Marathon landed him in the hospital for three nights. “I didn’t win and I didn’t finish,” Berman said of the race, which he ran for “Team Beans,” raising money for Dana Farber in memory of Francesca, the late daughter of his CNN colleague Andrew Kaczynski. He recalled being 24 miles into the marathon and feeling “terrific.” But that’s the last thing he remembers before waking up in an emergency room. Berman did make it to an emergency tent at mile 25, but he has no recollection of it. “Frankly, it does leave me feeling extremely unfulfilled. I’m not gonna lie, it kinda sucks. What doesn’t suck is being alive, and there was a bit of time last Monday where I wasn’t sure that was a given,” Berman said before fully detailing the story. He explained that after reaching the emergency tent, an ambulance was called as his temperature was high and his heart rate accelerated. He said he does...

Soon after the Orange County coroner’s office told him his eldest son had died, 81-year-old Francis Kerrigan went to the scene. It was a patch of blood-smeared pavement outside a Verizon store at a Fountain Valley strip mall. Frankie Kerrigan, 57, had profound schizophrenia, and had been on and off the streets for a decade. He resisted taking his medication, and tended to bolt if his family pushed. It looked like he had died violently on May 6, 2017. The grieving father, a retired electrical engineer, had talked to his son just days earlier. Now he was on his hands and knees, searching the pavement for anything his son had left behind. He found someone’s boot, but none of the three things he knew his son always carried — a pen, a wristwatch and a black attaché case. A body was delivered to the Kerrigans. There was a wake, a Catholic Mass and a burial in a family plot. On May 23 — 17 days after the death notification — a family friend called Francis Kerrigan to say the son...
Eric Adams took things to biblical proportions during a speech among religious leaders Thursday, saying the authors of the Bible would be right alongside him were they alive today. Adams, 61, spoke in front of dozens of faith leaders at a Christian praise rally in City Hall Park on Thursday, where he said the scribes would be helping him with his plan to clear the homeless from encampments. 'We are on the wrong road as a city. We have tolerated homelessness, walked past our brothers and sisters who are living in tents on the street, and we've normalized it,' he said. 'I can't help but to believe that if Matthew, Mark, Luke and John was here today, he would be on the streets with me, helping people get out of encampments.'  He also believed they would be on his side saying young people need to stay out of jail, affordable housing and health care.   'Those disciples of yesteryears are with the disciples of today of saying it's not about just talking about it, it's about being about it.'  Eric Adams...

(CNN)The doctor pleaded with Paige Deiner to close her eyes and sleep. But she refused to listen. She was terrified."If I go to sleep, I'm not going to wake up," she told him.It was an October night in 2021, and Deiner was fighting for her life, and the life of her 24-week-old baby. She was in the intensive care unit of a Delaware hospital after being diagnosed with Covid. She had lost 30 pounds in 12 days after being put on a ventilator. A doctor later told her that at one point he estimated she had a 5% chance of survival.Deiner was trying to calm her nerves when the doctor entered her room. She played Celtic music on her iPhone and watched "Peppa Pig," an animated children's television show, on a TV set. But each breath became a painful rasp, and she couldn't tune out the beeping from the monitors as the doctor urged her to listen. "You have to sleep," the doctor told her. "If you don't go to sleep, you're going to die. You can't heal yourself if...
By Nic Robertson | CNN More than 6,400 Russians have been arrested in anti-war protests since President Vladimir Putin’s troops invaded Ukraine, but not one bone-crunching detention has made state TV. Navigating the paradoxes of Putin’s authoritarian rule is a way of life here. Intuition nourished by a lifetime of state-fed lies gets most people through. And for many it consists of a quiet life with a steady income. But what’s happening now may be challenging some to push out of the old boundaries of the ‘see but don’t question orthodoxy’ that historically reinforced Putin’s grip on power. By Tuesday morning in Moscow, more than 1 million signatures had been added to a Russian-language Change.org petition against the war in Ukraine. On Moscow’s streets police vans loiter at most major intersections, riot-ready cops menace the sidewalks, and the city’s fabled Pushkin Square — a once-popular protesters’ haunt — is surrounded by a vast metal barricade. What’s going on is an all too obvious, overt opposition to Putin’s rule. The cost of joining, the government warns, could be “arrest” and a...

VLADIMIR Putin has always been a gangster — and he knows that you never bring a knife to a gunfight. That’s why he’s reminded us all that he’s got nuclear weapons. We hadn’t forgotten. 2Putin may hate peace talks but they may be the only way for him to save Russia, writes Tom TugendhatCredit: Reuters He has threatened them before and we know he will again. That’s why we’ve got to find a way to end this. The best option would be a change in Moscow. Russians have suffered enough. For more than 20 years, they have been robbed and murdered by Putin and his friends — their resources mined and sold overseas and they’ve seen little of the benefit. Roads are bad, hospitals failing and even education, once the pride of the Soviet Union, has been degraded. Putin destroyed his own country before turning to Ukraine. Now he’s sitting on a mountain of money he stole. Some say he’s worth more than £150billion. That’s not the only reason he wants to stay in the Kremlin. He’s worried the day...
EDDIE JONES knows it is 'win or bust' for England at Twickenham on Saturday. It certainly is for the Red Rose hopes of winning the Six Nations, with victory over Wales absolutely essential.  2It's crunch time for Eddie Jones this weekend as England host WalesCredit: Getty But maybe it is for the Aussie coach as well, with Jones aware of how RFU confidence in him could collapse if things degenerate further in the final two matches with Ireland and France. Which is why the loss of Manu Tuilagi, just hours after the sale centre was named in the starting side, was such a savage blow. As Jones conceded as he discussed the team he initially chose, he has 'learned to play' without Tuilagi over the past two injury-plagued seasons. But the game plan for the Welsh was very much based on using Tuilagi as the crash centre at 12, hoping to use his sheer power to 'create space for the little guys to play off'. Suddenly, as Tuilagi’s latest hamstring tweak ruled him out, that plan was torn up. Jones...
A Ukrainian woman who emerged bloodied but alive and was photographed in a now-iconic image after a Russian missile strike has shown off her love of nature in a set of charming pictures from before Putin invaded. Schoolteacher Olena Kurilo, 53, has seen her blood-covered face become the archetypal image associated with the invasion of Ukraine. Speaking with a heavily bandaged face outside her destroyed home in Chuguev, Kharkiv, in the northeast of Ukraine, on Thursday, she said she was 'very lucky' and admitted 'I must have a guardian angel' to have survived the attack.  The teacher said she 'never thought that this would truly happen in my lifetime' as, her voice catching in her throat, she described the damage to her 'completely destroyed' house.   Schoolteacher Olena Kurilo, 53, has shown off her love of nature in photos from before Russia's war with Ukraine She was able to enjoy the natural world before Putin invaded Ukraine. Olena Kurilo in a blue dress with white flowers (left) and in a pink dress standing in a tree with pink flowers (right) Olena Kurilo, whose blood-covered face has...
A Russian tank has been filmed crashing into and crushing a civilian car being driven by an elderly woman in a suburb of Ukraine's capital of Kyiv. The incident, recorded from multiple angles, saw the armoured vehicle driving down a main road leading through a residential area. As the tank quickly approached the civilian car driving in the opposite direction, it suddenly swerved towards it, giving the driver little time to react. The much larger vehicle crashed head-on into the vehicle and rolled on top of it, crushing it under its weight, before rolling off and driving away. The car was shunted backwards and almost on to tram tracks. Miraculously, reports said that the driver of the car survived the shocking crash, with a further video showing people working desperately to free her from the wreckage.  The incident occurred as Russian troops closed in on the Ukrainian capital after Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a full-scale invasion early on Thursday.
