NEW YORK (AP) — It’s often said that fans at live concerts give the band a jolt of electricity. Coldplay wants to literally harness that. The pop superstars have added kinetic dance floors and energy-storing stationary bikes to their latest world tour, encouraging fans to help power the show as they dance or spin. It’s part of a larger push to make the tour more environmentally friendly. The band — whose songs include the appropriately titled “Higher Power” — has pledged to be as sustainable and low-carbon as possible, hoping to cut their CO2 emissions by 50%. “You don’t want to come across as being overly earnest. This stuff is really good fun as well,” said bassist Guy Berryman. “That’s the way it will bed in, if people see it less as a sort of onerous responsibility and more as a kind of opportunity to do something fun and it’s a benefit to the environment and to the whole concert experience.” Each kinetic dance floor can hold dozens of people, with electricity created when movement is made on...
Share this: Brooklyn’s streets will be filled with thousands of bicyclists this Sunday as the world’s most popular bike ride, the TD Five Boro Bike Tour is back at full strength. Delayed and limited to 20,000 participants last year due to COVID-19, this year the sold-out event includes more than 32,000 cyclists, who will bike 40 miles across all five boroughs. The event begins in Lower Manhattan, swings through the Bronx, Queens and Brooklyn, and winds up in Staten Island. The Brooklyn leg passes through multiple neighborhoods from Greenpoint through Williamsburg and DUMBO and along the BQE to Bay Ridge, with plenty of great viewing areas along the way. (See viewing locations below.) Best of all for bikers, the entire route is car-free.  There are multiple rest areas with snacks and repair stations set up along the route. There are also several departure spots for those who only want to bike part of the route (such as families with children), including one at mile 27 near the Brooklyn Bridge.
Share this: Registration is now open for the 2022 TD Five Boro Bike Tour, which is to bicycling what the New York Marathon is to running.  Registration was delayed earlier this month due to the rise in COVID-19 cases associated with Omicron, but with numbers in New York and other parts of the country on the decline, Bike New York, the ride’s sponsor and its city partners are now opening registration for America’s biggest and best bike ride. Additionally, after last year’s TD Five Boro Bike Tour was capped at 20,000 registrants and notably delayed until August, this year’s tour is scheduled in the spring on Sunday, May 1, and is planned for full capacity — with 32,000 cyclists riding.

Cherry red. A throttle on the handlebar. Two wheels … and two seats. When we arrived at Pedego Electric Bikes in Livermore, our ride — a tandem electric bicycle — was already pulled out of the shop, gleaming in the hot morning sun. We clipped on our helmets and got ready to ride. The tandem is “a relationship tester,” owner Jim Buck warned. It might take some time to find our balance. We should practice in the parking lot first. He was right. Riding a tandem bike requires coordination and communication (and occasional shouts of “What are you doing?” and “Slow down!”) The rider in front steers. But it’s the rider in the back (if I do say so myself) who has the harder task — keep pedaling, even though you can’t really see the road ahead. This was an apt metaphor for our self-planned tour of Livermore wine country. We’d done a little research in advance — popular routes, winery opening and closing times — but had no reservations and no schedule. We were after an adventure. Jim Buck,...
