CONAKRY, Guinea (AP) — Fatoumata Yarie Camara is used to being thrown to the ground and getting up again, getting back into the fight. She’s dedicated her life to wrestling, a sport that breeds tenacity. On the mat, she qualified for the Tokyo Olympics, the only athlete from Guinea to do so. Off the mat, she has battled the beliefs of her culture and family that women don’t belong in sports. Camara endured delays as the pandemic threatened the Games. Then, three days before the rescheduled opening ceremony, her dream of standing alongside the world’s best athletes teetered on a plane ticket — one she couldn’t afford and government officials hadn’t given her. Saying they wanted to keep Guinea’s athletes safe from COVID-19, the country withdrew from the Olympics entirely. Camara and others were skeptical of officials’ reasoning and believe Guinea mismanaged planning for the Games. She gives the nation hope, officials tell her, but they’ve never given her any. At home, the 25-year-old clutched her medals — from regional competitions, the African Games, and her Olympic...

From his earliest memories, Karl Raschke knew his father as both Dad and as the professional wrestler Baron von Raschke. “My dad started wrestling well before I was born,” Karl Raschke said. “As soon as I was watching TV, he was being a bad guy, but he was my dad and I thought he was a superhero. And I knew that he was play-acting, to some extent, because I knew him as this sweet (guy).” Raschke had seen his father wrestle hundreds of times, but in 1983, the then-13-year-old attended his first Baron von Raschke bout alone, without his family. He sat in the middle of a sold-out crowd at the St. Paul Civic Center and watched his dad take on various opponents, including one Jesse “The Body” Ventura. As the night progressed, the crowd got increasingly agitated and wild. Raschke knew he was watching the match through a different lens than those around him, but the sheer intensity of the fans was starting to scare him. “Out of nowhere, with the sense things are out of control, over the...

Fresh-faced and smiling shyly, this is King Sooper shooter Ahmad Alissa, 21, seen in a school yearbook photo taken just two years ago. The photo, exclusively obtained by DailyMail.com, was captured while the killer was studying at West Arvada High where he excelled at wrestling but little else, according to friends. A second photo from the yearbook shows Alissa's wrestling team and lists him among the fighters, although he is not in the picture because he was kicked off the team after a foul-mouthed outburst after losing a fight in training. Alissa has piled on 60lbs since leaving school, moving into his parents' basement and starting work at his brother's restaurant – Sultan Grill – in Arvada, Colorado. Court records obtained by DailyMail.com show he weighed 140lbs when he was arrested for beating up a classmate in November 2017.  Boulder gunman Ahmad Alissa is pictured in 2019 as a fresh-faced, smiling student at West Arvada High School, where he was a wrestler.  Former classmates have revealed how Alissa (pictured right wearing wrestling medals) in an undated Facebook photo...
Jim Crockett Jr., legendary wrestling promoter and titan in the grappling industry, has died at age 72. Crockett is best known as the head of Jim Crockett Promotions, which he took over from his father in the 1970s. JCP’s role, played during wrestling’s territory days in the ’70s and ’80s, was titanic, helping grow the National Wrestling Alliance and serving three different terms as president of the NWA in the ’80s.  Crockett purchasing TBS TV time on Saturday nights from rival Vince McMahon helped Crockett-owned promotions grow beyond some regional boundaries, eventually paving the way for national expansion for the company. The company would later be renamed World Championship Wrestling (WCW) after the promotion’s sale to TV mogul Ted Turner. TBS Saturdays in the ’80s were heavy on JCP programming, and the promotion would help catapult the careers of several wrestling icons, including Ric Flair, Ricky Steamboat and Sting.
