PITTSBURGH (AP) — Kenny Pickett did the math 16 months ago. It was pretty simple. The University of Pittsburgh quarterback could have entered the 2021 draft and taken his chances, knowing he likely wouldn’t have heard his name called until the third day. It was tempting. At one point, it even seemed likely. Pickett even went through the whole Senior Day thing at Heinz Field in November 2020. Still, the sense of unfinished business nagged at him. The sense of what still could be, too. More than the eye-popping numbers, more than the highlight-reel plays, Pickett knew if he could find a way to lead the Panthers out of the wilderness of 40ish years of middling play, everything else would sort of fall into place. And suddenly there Pickett was on Friday afternoon, running on adrenaline after a whirlwind 18 or so hours in which the kid from New Jersey who envisioned himself being drafted in the first round as a 7-year-old stood next to Pittsburgh Steelers president Art Rooney II, a No. 1 jersey in his hand...
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Dalvin Cook rushed for 205 yards and two touchdowns in his faster-than-expected return from a shoulder injury, and the Minnesota Vikings held on to beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 36-28 by forcing an incomplete pass in the end zone on the final play Thursday night. Ben Roethlisberger’s throw to Pat Freiermuth was on target, but Anthony Barr and Harrison Smith sandwiched the rookie tight end at just the right moment to dislodge the ball and give the Vikings (6-7) a critical victory after they nearly squandered a 29-0 late-third-quarter lead. READ MORE: St. Paul Police Seek Help Finding Woman Who Randomly Shot At VehiclesAll but one of Minnesota’s games this year have been decided by eight points or less. Roethlisberger had touchdown passes to Najee Harris, James Washington and Freiermuth in the second half, and Harris ran for a score, too, as the Steelers (6-6-1) recovered from their abysmal start. The Vikings had a 300-66 advantage in total yards in the first half, but Ahkello Witherspoon intercepted Kirk Cousins twice after halftime to fuel the rally. Just as...
The Ravens gambled and went for a potential game-winning 2-point conversion attempt with 12 seconds left but couldn’t convert in a 20-19 loss to the Steelers in Pittsburgh. Here are five things we learned Sunday. The Ravens finally found a game they could not win close and ugly. We have wondered for weeks how long the Ravens could keep winning in the face of unproductive first quarters, erratic offensive performances, negative turnover differentials and depth-sapping injuries. Somehow, they went into Sunday as the AFC’s No. 1 seed. After the Cincinnati Bengals fell to the Los Angeles Chargers earlier in the afternoon, they had a chance to widen their lead in the AFC North to two games with five to play. Yes, they were entering the devil’s den known as Heinz Field — Terrible Towels, cussing fans, “Renegade,” the whole bit. But these were not the scary Steelers of old. The leading storylines in Pittsburgh were the possible impending retirement of 39-year-old quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and the sudden failure of a defense that had allowed 82 points over...
The Pittsburgh Steelers should do whatever it takes to draft Kenny Pickett as the replacement for Ben Roethlisberger and this play proves it. NFL teams are always looking to find their next quarterback in the draft. For the Pittsburgh Steelers, getting the draft right this year is essential to the future of the franchise. This may not be the strongest quarterback class in history, but the Steelers can take heart knowing their ideal pick is so obvious. It’s Kenny Pickett and this play proves it.Kenny Pickett continues to show why he fits the SteelersKenny Pickett doing Kenny Pickett things ????‍♂️@Pitt_FB | @kennypickett10 ????: https://t.co/IM87ULzogp pic.twitter.com/rAxrlVtAKa — ACC Football (@ACCFootball) November 20, 2021 Pickett’s escapability was on display there. So was his vision and arm. He got away from the pressure, kept his eyes downfield and found his man open in the back of the endzone. While attention will fall on Ole Miss’ Matt Corral and others, the Steelers should be in a good spot to go out and pick up the Pitt quarterback. The key is making...

But as head coach Mike Tomlin put it earlier this week, there are no FCS matchups in the NFL — meaning the Steelers have no choice but to take the Lions seriously. The message appears to have sunk in. “I don’t think we need motivation,” defensive lineman Cam Heyward said Thursday, via Teresa Varley of the Steelers website. “There’s no guarantee. There’s no way to say we’ve already won the game before. The best way to do that is go out there and dominate on Sunday. We’ve been close in a lot of games and we need to make sure that we play our best game.” Heyward noted...

The Pittsburgh Steelers and Buffalo Bills will meet in Buffalo to kickoff their respective seasons. Pittsburgh enters Week 1 as 5.5-point underdogs to Buffalo, and these five players will have to stand out in order to secure a victory.Najee HarrisThe Bills run defense was bad last season, and the Steelers still couldn’t run the ball against them. Buffalo then sat on the short routes, which all but derailed any sort of movement from the Steelers offense. Harris needs to play big in his debut in...

Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images Landon Dickerson #69 of the Alabama Crimson Tide looks on prior to the College Football Playoff game against the Ohio State Buckeyes on January 11, 2021. With the recent retirement of perennial Pro Bowler Maurkice Pouncey, center is now one of the biggest needs for the Pittsburgh Steelers. History suggests the Steelers will fill that need by signing a free agent—at least as a stopgap option—while they scour the college ranks for a potential long-term replacement. While there are attractive options available in free agency—all of whom would be an upgrade compared to Pouncey in 2020—salary cap constraints may nudge the Steelers to add a center in the first three or four rounds of the draft. If they go that route, following are a trio of candidates, all of whom seem destined to be drafted on Day 2, though the last of the three could fall into the middle rounds. Landon Dickerson (Alabama)Most NFL analysts regard Landon Dickerson (6-foot-6, 325 pounds) as the best prospect at the center position. He played the final...

He helped lead the Pittsburgh Steelers to 11 straight wins right out of the gate. Then things fell apart for both Big Ben and his team; the defense lost a few key contributors and couldn't pick up the slack while Roethlisberger's inability to throw the deep ball became readily apparent and an easy weakness for opponents to take advantage of. The Steelers lost four of their final five games and fell in the first round of the playoffs. Roethlisberger still wants to play in 2021. That is a bit of a problem because his cap hit is simply enormous as of now. The longtime Steelers signal-caller will...
Political differences: 10 ways to de-escalate political discussions with friends and family who disagree with you Trump has suggested he wants to pardon himself: NYT Anatomy of a wild-card win: For Steelers, pressuring Baker Mayfield is the key to victory Super Wild-Card Weekend comes to a close Sunday night when the Pittsburgh Steelers host the Cleveland Browns. This game is the third meeting between the teams (having split the season series) and is a rematch of a Week 17 game won by Cleveland. © Provided by Touchdown Wire Of course there are some storylines surrounding this game, most notably the fact that Browns head coach and potential Coach of the Year winner Kevin Stefanski, will be unable to be with the team due to COVID-19. That obviously poses challenges for the Browns. For the Steelers, however, they’ll need to contend with a Cleveland offense that Stefanski rebuilt this season. A reason why the first-time head coach is in the running for such an award is the job that he has done with quarterback Baker Mayfield. Over this season Stefanski’s...
By: KDKA-TV News Staff PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — With the Steelers set to face off against the Cleveland Browns in the wild card round of the NFL playoffs, quarterback Ben Roethlisberger opened up and discussed a number of different topics. Roethlisberger talked at length with Steelers.com writer Teresa Varley, discussing among other things, how it felt to watch last week’s game from home with his family. “I enjoyed watching the game, not as much as playing in it,” said Roethlisberger. “I sat at home and watched it with my family. I felt like my son asked me a question every single play, so I felt like I was really extra engaged in it.” Roethlisberger was among several players who head coach Mike Tomlin chose to not play in the Week 17 game, opting instead to rest those players. Roethlisberger went on to say that he is excited for the upcoming game this weekend and values every opportunity to play in the postseason. The Steelers last playoff game they participated in was a 45-42 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars at Heinz Field...
Dads took on more childcare when they worked from home during COVID-19. Will a vaccine end that? Ex-election security chief Christopher Krebs confronts GOP on false fraud claims: Its got to stop There might be a simple solution to the Steelers offensive problems Two weeks is an eternity in the NFL. Two weeks ago, the Steelers were on top of the league standings at 11-0. The ‘72 Dolphins weren’t getting nervous quite yet, but we were a few weeks away from that point. And with a game against a nameless Football Team next up on the schedule, 12-0 looked like an inevitability. © Provided by For The Win Then something funny happened. The Steelers lost to Washington. And then followed that up with a loss to the upstart Bills. And, all of a sudden, the issues that had been festering below the “undefeated” surface started to emerge as real problems for a team that had been considered a Super Bowl contender. Namely, a punchless offense incapable of producing explosive plays in the passing game. There’s no other way around...

By: KDKA-TV News Staff PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — Fans will not get to see the Pittsburgh Steelers face off against the Baltimore Ravens Thanksgiving night. The game was moved to Sunday, a move which has disappointed fans and even some players. Steelers President Art Rooney II issued his own statement Thanksgiving morning on Twitter. “Though we are disappointed that we will not get to play for our fans on Thanksgiving night this year, we look forward to many more exciting times during the 2020 season. Today gives us all a time to reflect and appreciate what we can be thankful for on this holiday. And I want to add a special note of thanks to all our frontline workers for all your tireless efforts in these difficult times. On behalf of the entire Steelers organization, I want to thank Steelers nation for all your support during this unusual season and wish you and your families a safe and happy Thanksgiving!” the Pittsburgh Steelers account tweeted on behalf of Rooney II. Chase Claypool is the latest elite wide receiver the Pittsburgh Steelers have found, and he just might help Mike Tomlin go 16-0, The Las Vegas Raiders could play spoiler, and much more The Pittsburgh Steelers are 10-0. They look like the most complete team in the NFL on the backs of a menacing and star-studded defense, featuring playmakers at every level. They have a real shot at going undefeated. “When you’re on that staff you ask yourself every day ‘when I turn on the tape, what kind of football do I want to see? The whole building, everyone in that organization has to hold themselves to that standard every single day. And they live that there.” Looking ahead at the Steelers’ six remaining games, 16-0 with home-field advantage throughout the playoffs seems like a legitimate possibility. Who beats this team? Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield intends to play Sunday against the Steelers. The Steelers-Titans Week 4 game scheduled for Sunday will not be played Monday or Tuesday. The NFL announced on Thursday morning that the matchup between the two current 3-0 AFC teams will be played at a later date because of concerns over Tennessee’s COVID-19 outbreak. The NFL was considering playing the game Monday early evening ahead of the Falcons-Packers game. Tuesday would have been the latest extension for Pittsburgh traveling to Nashville in Week 4. Instead, erring on the side of caution and safety, the NFL is simply pushing the Steelers-Titans to later in the season. Unfortunately, the teams don’t have the same bye in the middle of the 2020 season. The Titans have an open date in Week 7, but the Steelers are off only in Week 8. But with the postponement, consider both the Titans and Steelers having an undesired unofficial bye in Week 4, when no teams were scheduled to be off. Because most teams prefer to have a bye right around the midway point, the Titans’ facility shutdown is a disadvantage to both teams in...
