Tom Cruise is Hollywood’s last great movie star, and though his baby face is vanishing, he hasn’t stopped fighting Father Time, continuing to embark upon daredevil cinematic endeavors that reconfirm his eternal youthfulness. Top Gun: Maverick (May 27) is an overt attempt at clinging to the past, a revisitation of the 1986 hit that propelled Cruise to the A-list stratosphere—and epitomized the decade’s hyper-flashy gung-ho spirit—through a combination of sonic-boom military showdowns, gauzy romance, Top 40 soundtrack singles, and sweaty homoerotic posturing. Yet more than that, director Joseph Kosinski’s sequel is a reaffirmation of its headliner’s peerless stardom and, with it, the full-throttle pleasures of yesteryear blockbusters that prized marquee personality and practical effects over weightless CGI spectacle. A nakedly nostalgic vehicle predicated on beloved IP and its leading man’s unflagging charisma, it’s a summer spectacular that proves that there’s still life left in the old ways, all while stoking, and satisfying, that familiar need for speed. Cruise’s battle against aging reaches its apex with Top Gun: Maverick, which has been crafted as a shrine to his immortal manliness...

Jeff Farschman, 72, is a serial cruiser from Delaware who spends months at sea in retirement.Jeff Farschman For nearly two decades, Jeff Farschman, 72, has spent his golden years like many other adventurous retirees — enjoying leisure cruises to exotic ports of call. But unlike many of his fellow cruise passengers, Farschman basically lives at sea. He spends months traveling the world's oceans and waterways — half of the year, if not more. Although he still keeps a physical home near where he grew up in Delaware, Farschman is now part of a growing cohort of older folks who are literally "retiring" on cruise ships. "Pandemic aside, I've been cruising for seven to eight months a year," Farschman said. "I am a world traveler and explorer type and cruising has literally allowed me to see the entire planet."  More from Personal Finance:Here's how to buy new work clothes on a budgetThese are the best and worst U.S. places to dieBe sure to manage this risk as you near retirement Living on a ship was not exactly what Farschman had in...
IF eight seasons of Below Deck has taught us anything, it's that working on a cruise ship looks like a pretty fun job. Essentially you're getting paid to travel the world, enjoy the sunshine and have some wild out-of-hours parties. 2Juliana worked on two cruise ships from 2016-2017Credit: TikTok/ touristtolocal 2The ship had bingo nights for the crew and parties in their clubCredit: TikTok/ touristtolocal But as TikToker Juliana knows all too well, it's not quite as glamorous as it looks. In a series of viral videos, the social media star opened up about her time working on two cruises - and it sounds absolutely gruelling. Juliana told her 88,000 followers: "Travel is the most important thing in my life and when I graduated in 2016, I started a mission to find jobs which allowed me to keep travelling." For two years, Juliana worked on two different cruises and eventually met her husband on the second one. After being asked what staff do when guests leave the ship, Juliana explained how they were usually contracted to work for six months...
Jenelle Evans "Teen Mom 2" alum Barbara revealed if MTV reached out to her to join "Family Reunion," the spinoff series. It sounds like if Barbara Evans had things her way, she would be back on “Teen Mom 2.” Evans teamed up with her daughter — Jenelle Evans Eason — for a live stream on Instagram. The two answered fan questions, and many of them centered around “Teen Mom 2.” Eason was fired from the show in 2019 after her husband, David Eason, shot and killed their French bulldog, Nugget. Barbara Evans was also released from her contract. Since then, Barbara has kept a relatively low profile. But since she and her daughter are on better terms, for now, she joined Eason in her “she shed” for a Q&A session on February 15. Evans hinted she would have been interested in joining “Family Reunion” — the spinoff series that brought cast from both franchises together — if only she had been invited. “Nobody called. I could have been the den mother. Like the dorm mother when you go...
Washington, DC (CNN)Cruise, the self-driving subsidiary of General Motors, started offering robotaxi rides this week in San Francisco. Anyone can sign up for the chance to be selected to get a ride in a self-driving car, provided they don't mind staying up late. Cruise's robotaxis are generally only operating from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m, according to the company. Access is limited, so people are likely to find themselves idling on Cruise's wait list. So far Cruise says it's given more than 500 rides. Cruise has for years tested its self-driving cars in San Francisco and planned to offer rides to the public. "The chaotic, gritty streets of SF are our launchpad," Cruise's then-CEO Dan Ammann wrote in a 2020 blog post. "An electric car, driving by itself, navigating one of the most difficult driving cities in the world." But Cruise's nighttime hours will largely shield it from the hardest challenges of city driving, according to autonomous vehicle experts. Driving late at night is easier for autonomous cars and comes with fewer risks. There are far fewer challenges on the...

QUESTION: The masks that you're trying to procure, do you have a sense of that N95s, KN95s in that universe, or is that just -- we're not quite there?JEN PSAKI, WHITE HOUSE PRESS SECRETARY: We will have more, I expect, in the coming days on that. And -- but, right now, just so people understand the backstory here, the history, I should say, is, we have distributed more than 30 million masks to food banks and community health centers. States have been doing that as well. We have a stockpile of 700 million high-quality masks in the government. And they're also widely available across the country. So what we're talking about here is making high-quality masks, as you know, available to the American people for free. There are a lot of ranges of high-quality masks.I think we will have more details on that and what that looks like next week.QUESTION: And then I know...

At least four cruise ships reported Omicron outbreaks on board last week and were turned away from their ports of call as the CDC announced Monday it was investigating reported COVID cases on nearly 70 luxury liners.  Passengers who were marooned aboard cruise liners on Christmas Day spoke out about a lack of concern from other passengers and a dearth of communication from staff.  'It was disgusting,' said Kimberly Kelley, who was a passenger on Carnival Cruise Line's Freedom, which returned to port in Miami on Sunday after a 'small number' of COVID cases were reported.  'We didn't touch one pool on that ship because everyone's in there all over each other - no one's wearing masks, nobody cared,' Kelley told CNN.  'Now I have to worry I'm going to have COVID?' In hindsight, another passenger on the Freedom liner called cruises the 'worst kind of travel you can do,' telling Good Morning America that 'it's not safe at all' and that it was 'like a petri dish.' Kimberley Kelley, a Carnival Freedom Cruise Passenger, told ABC News and CNN...
Packing for any trip takes some planning, but cruise vacations present a unique challenge. For starters, ship staterooms are typically smaller than most hotel rooms, so storage space may be limited. On top of that, you may be unable to purchase accidently forgotten items once your voyage begins; some stores in other countries are closed on Sundays and holidays (or during lunch hours), and they may have different products than you are used to. Cruise ship retail shops also shut down while docked in port, and many of them — especially on smaller vessels — have limited inventory to begin with. While you don’t want to pack everything in your bathroom or closet at home, it’s nice to have what you need before you board the ship. To help you decide what to bring, U.S. News has compiled this list of items to pack for your next cruise. Some will simplify and organize your packing experience, while others are handy to have on the ship or in port. Once you have these items securely stowed in your luggage, you can...
MIAMI (CBSMiami) — Port Everglades looked like its best pre-pandemic days of activity on Saturday, as thousands of passengers boarded cruise ships. “We are ecstatic, finally, again, woohoo,” cheered a passenger celebrating. For many in the group, their trip couldn’t have come soon enough. According to Port Everglades officials, 6 ships set sail Saturday, the largest number since the pandemic. “We feel like it’s from Bally the start of the cruise season,” said Ellen Kennedy a spokesperson with Port Everglades. But she adds as the season gets underway, there have been some changes. “The cruise lines are following CDD guidelines and they’re going out with limited capacity much lower than they normally would and they’re taking all kinds of precautions”, said Kennedy. On A clear and balmy evening, I’m standing on the top deck of the luxury liner Celebrity Summit as it slips its moorings and glides sedately out of Miami, Florida, towards open water. It’s anchors aweigh for Goop at Sea, the latest venture by Gwyneth Paltrow’s lifestyle and wellness company that promises a new kind of holiday experience with Goop workouts, Goop mindfulness sessions and Gwynnie-approved Goop fitness products on board. Ever since the Academy Award-winning actress founded the company in 2008, it has been loved and loathed, with detractors claiming it showcases a rarified lifestyle that most of us, with limited time and money, cannot afford and peddles alternative wellness practices based on pseudo-science. In 2018, Goop was hit with a $145,000 (£104,940) fine in California for ‘unsubstantiated marketing claims’ that its jade eggs — designed for rather intimate use and still available for £47.49 via its U.S. website, in case you’re interested — could boost orgasms, prevent uterine prolapse, balance hormones and regulate menstrual cycles. Other controversies include the gimmicky This Smells Like My Vagina candle (£68) and...

We hear the Virgin Group founder did karaoke on his new cruise ship, Scarlet Lady, in Miami this week — and belted out Madonna’s “Like a Virgin.” Our source tells us a small group of VIPs followed the billionaire as he hopped between the Virgin Voyages ship’s multiple eateries and bars, before seeing him get on stage with Miami Heat star Victor Oladipo to belt out the 1984 hit. “It was great,” says the witness. “He sang the whole song. He can carry a tune. Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's just Tom Cruise parachuting off a cliff. The "Mission Impossible" star, 59, surprised some hikers when his helicopter landed near their walking trail in England’s Lake District. Cruise exited the chopper with a few other people and then proceeded to parachute off a nearby cliff. The actor was apparently practicing for a stunt. The hikers spoke to The Sun and admitted the encounter left them "totally flabbergasted." "I certainly wasn’t expecting to bump into Tom Cruise during my hike," Andras Katica said.  TOM CRUISE LANDS HELICOPTER IN UK FAMILY'S GARDEN, TAKES THEM FOR A RIDE "But he was really friendly and offered to have his picture taken. Tom Cruise got a sneak peek at what it's like to circle Earth in a SpaceX capsule. Representatives for SpaceX’s first privately chartered flight revealed Friday that the actor took part in a call with the four space tourists orbiting more than 360 miles up. Thursday’s conversation, like the entire three-day flight, was private and so no details were released. "Maverick, you can be our wingman anytime," came the announcement from the flight's Twitter feed. Cruise starred as Navy pilot Pete "Maverick" Mitchell in the 1986 film "Top Gun." A sequel comes out next year. Last year, NASA confirmed it was in talks with Cruise about visiting the International Space Station for filming. SpaceX would provide the lift, as it does for NASA astronauts, and like it did Wednesday night for the billionaire up there now with his two contest winners and a hospital worker.
