After years of having their pitching depth tested by injuries, the Yankees came into this season feeling they were fully stocked for the rotation and the bullpen. That stockpile will likely be tested. Chad Green was examined on Friday after leaving Thursday’s game with right forearm discomfort and while there was no diagnosis made public, Aaron Boone said that it was “definitely a concern” now. On top of that, pitching prospect Luis Gil, who made a spot start for the Yankees a week ago, has a “significant” injury,  the Yankees manager announced after Friday night’s series opener against the White Sox at Yankee Stadium was postponed by rain. “I think there’s that fear, sure,” Boone said when asked if he thought Green’s injury was significant. “But, again, it’s definitely a concern right now. But I’d rather get with the doctors and kind of see where we’re at by the end of the day tomorrow.” The fear with any forearm discomfort is obviously damage to the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL). A significant compromise of that ligament is what leads to Tommy John surgery....
The schedule is set for the Miami Heat when it comes to the NBA Eastern Conference finals. The opponent, though, remains to be determined. With the Dallas Mavericks forcing a Sunday Game 7 of that Western Conference semifinal series with their Thursday night victory over the visiting Phoenix Suns, it means the Heat will definitively open their best-of-seven Eastern Conference finals series at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at FTX Arena. Had the Suns closed out that series against the Mavericks on Thursday, there remained the chance of the Heat opening the East finals Sunday. The Heat, who eliminated the Philadelphia 76ers in six games in their best-of-seven Eastern Conference semifinal series with their 99-90 victory Thursday night at Wells Fargo Center, will face either the Milwaukee Bucks or Boston Celtics in the East finals. The Bucks lead that best-of-seven series 3-2 heading into Friday’s Game 6 at Milwaukee’s Fiserv Forum. If a Game 7 of that series is needed it would be Sunday in Boston at TD Garden. As the East’s No. 1 seed, the Heat will host Game 1 on...
Erik Spoelstra is not a doctor and doesn’t pretend to be as he coaches the Miami Heat. So whether it is the damaged thumb ligament, orbital fracture or concussion that has had Joel Embiid first compromised and then sidelined during these NBA playoffs, Spoelstra has gameplanned as if the Philadelphia 76ers could center reemerge in the mix. “You have to plan for it. Whether he does or not, it would be irresponsible not to,” Spoelstra said, as the Heat set their focus on Friday’s 7 p.m. Game 3 at Wells Fargo Center, with a 2-0 lead in this best-of-seven Eastern Conference semifinal series. “I mean it changes dramatically. You’re talking about MVP talent, you know. So we’ll just have to see. “We knew that this series was going to shift and was going to change pretty dramatically. It’s better for it to change dramatically when we’re able to get a couple of wins. But, yeah, he changes the equation quite a bit.” In contrast to Spoelstra, the 76ers have taken the approach that there are no guarantees with Embiid. “If...
Giants fans planning on watching Friday night’s game against the Nationals won’t be able to find it on their usual channel, NBC Sports Bay Area. This Friday will mark the first time the Giants will be featured on Apple TV+’s Game of the Week, with the game exclusively shown on the streaming service. First pitch from Oracle Park is at 7:15 p.m. So while that means Duane Kuiper and Mike Krukow won’t be on the call for the game, former Giant Hunter Pence will be on the call as the color commentator. A fan favorite, Pence has done some games for the Giants’ local broadcasts before and is part of the rotation this season, but will be doing one game a week for Apple TV+. Pence will be joined by Stephen Nelson (play-by-play), Katie Nolan (color commentator) and Heidi Watney (on-the-field reporter) on the broadcast Friday night. The other game of the Apple TV+ doubleheader Friday night is Yankees at Royals, with first pitch at 5:15 p.m. The Apple TV+ app is available on most smart televisions, smartphones and other...
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Los Angeles Dodgers setup man Blake Treinen was placed on the 10-day injured list with right shoulder discomfort Friday, more than a week after his last appearance. The move was retroactive to Tuesday, meaning he’ll be eligible to return on April 29. Manager Dave Roberts said earlier this week that Treinen’s arm was “barking” following the last time he pitched on April 14 against Cincinnati. Treinen is 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA in three appearances this season, with five strikeouts and no walks. The Dodgers recalled left-handed pitcher Garrett Cleavinger to take Treinen’s roster spot. Cleavinger is in his second stint with the team after being optioned Sunday. He has appeared in one game for the Dodgers this season, allowing one run on two hits in two-thirds of an inning. The Dodgers opened a three-game series at San Diego on Friday night. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports Copyright © 2022 The Associated Press. At least they beat Kristaps Porzingis. The return of the savior-turned-villain at MSG turned into a nailbiter for the Knicks, who defeated Porzingis and the Wizards on Friday night, 100-97, continuing their too-little-too-late surge to end the season. It ended with dramatics, as the Knicks nearly blew a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter. But Washington’s Kyle Kuzma missed his potential go-ahead trey with about five seconds remaining – and his teammate Kentavious Caldwell-Pope followed with another brick at the buzzer – and the game ended with a triumphant James Dolan shaking Porzingis’ hand after the home team’s victory. Porzingis, who finished with 18 points in 29 minutes, was booed early and often but it was hardly the level of vitriol the Latvian encountered during his first return to MSG in 2019. The building was on fire back then, with the anger over Porzingis’ trade demand still fresh. A lot has happened in the last three years. And neither side should feel good about their lottery-bound position. In terms of consequence, Friday’s game was largely immaterial. Both teams are fighting...
VENICE, Fla. (AP) — Royce Lewis joked that he wanted to hit four home runs in his first game in more than two years. He also hoped for several opportunities to make defensive plays. One out of two goals isn’t bad. The Minnesota Twins prospect went 0 for 2 in a 3-1 loss to the Atlanta Braves in Grapefruit League exhibition play on Friday afternoon, batting leadoff and playing shortstop in his first live action since March 10, 2020. Lewis, the first overall pick in the 2017 amateur draft, missed the 2021 season as he recovered from surgery last February to repair a torn right anterior cruciate ligament. “I don’t even think about the knee,” Lewis said. “I think the best part about my injury is that it’s kind of behind me. It’s in the rearview mirror.” Two springs ago, the Twins were hopeful that Lewis had big things in store for his immediate baseball future. He was named the Arizona Fall League MVP award winner in 2019 and expecting to see increased playing time in his second big league...

MIAMI (AP) — Markieff Morris is finally on the cusp of returning to the Miami Heat. A person with knowledge of the situation says Morris has received clearance to play again, a move that comes more than four months after he was injured in a scuffle with Denver’s Nikola Jokic. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Friday because the clearance has not been revealed publicly. One of the final steps in the process toward a return came this week when Morris’ case was heard by the NBA’s Fitness-to-Play Panel, consisting of three physicians who determine if a player is, as described by the league’s collective bargaining agreement, “medically able and medically fit to practice and play.” That panel determined that Morris can indeed return, and the belief is that sometime during the remainder of Miami’s current homestand — Saturday against Minnesota, Tuesday against Detroit or next Friday against Oklahoma City — the 11-season veteran will be available to play. Morris has been working out for several weeks, with hopes of returning to the Heat lineup....
BOSTON (CBS) —  The 2022 Major League Baseball season has been saved, with 162 games coming at us in the very near future. While the Red Sox will open their season on the road, a tradition will continue as soon as they return to Fenway Park. While Boston’s Home Opener on April 15 is currently listed as a 7 p.m. start, Red Sox team president Sam Kennedy says the first Sox game in Boston will indeed be an afternoon game. First pitch against the Minnesota Twins will happen shortly after 2 p.m. that Friday afternoon, Kennedy announced on WEEI’s The Greg Hill Show on Friday. That is the start of a four-game set for the Sox and the Twins, which will end with Boston’s usual Patriots’ Day matinee. That Monday morning tilt usually ends just as a slew of Boston Marathon runners make their way through the Fenway area. The Red Sox will open their 2022 campaign on the road, starting April 7 with a three-game set against the New York Yankees in the Bronx. Three games against the Tigers...
Rams offensive tackle Joe Noteboom and tight end Tyler Higbee were placed on injured reserve on Friday. The move was expected for Higbee, who hasn’t practiced since being injured in the NFC title game. Noteboom practiced on a limited basis on Wednesday and Thursday, but was a non-participant on Friday. There were no setbacks for running back Darrell Henderson and defensive linemen Sebastian Joseph-Day. Rams coach Sean McVay said both will be activated from IR. “They’ll be ready to go,” the coach added. Friday’s work was conducted under balmy, 82-degree conditions. The wind that was problematic earlier in the week, forcing McVay to move practice to the Rose Bowl on Thursday, was not a factor and barely noticeable. “Nice!” McVay said. “The weather cooperated with us. Everything is coming together at the right time.” With the final hours leading up to the matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals in the wind, McVay summed up the theme to his players. “Do your last little preparation, but trust your preparation,” he said. “Trust your process. Trust yourself and your teammates. Understand...
PAUL POGBA is making a late bid to be in the squad for Friday's FA Cup fourth-round match against Middlesbrough. The Manchester United midfielder has not played since the 2-2 Champions League draw away to Atalanta on November 2. 1Paul Pogba could return from injury in Man Utd's FA Cup game against MiddlesbroughCredit: PA He picked up a thigh injury the following week while training with the French squad. The initial prognosis was that he would be out for eight weeks but it has been three months now. But he has been back in full training at Carrington and manager Ralf Rangnick will decide Friday morning whether to include him in the squad for that evening fixture against the Championship side. Should Pogba feature, it would be his first appearance under interim gaffer Rangnick. SunSport revealed last week that the French World Cup winner has had a number of positive talks with the United boss. He has been impressed with his ideas to get the best out of the player during the remainder of the season. It was something former...
The Giants abruptly canceled Friday’s practice and reverted to 2020 virtual protocols in response to the simultaneous spreads of COVID-19 and the flu through their building. “We obviously didn’t have outbreaks this big or bad last year for the Giants,” safety Logan Ryan said on a Friday afternoon Zoom call, with all media availability pushed virtual. Safety J.R. Reed and corner Natrell Jamerson tested positive for COVID-19 on Friday, giving the Giants eight positives since Monday. So they’re trying to ensure they’ll have enough players available for Sunday’s home game against the Dallas Cowboys. “We’ve known since the beginning of last year: the games are gonna go on,” head coach Joe Judge said on Zoom. “So whoever you have, you have to have them ready.” Ironically, the NFL promptly postponed three of this weekend’s games due to COVID outbreaks only hours after Judge made that statement. The league moved Browns-Raiders from Saturday to Monday at 5 p.m., and Washington-Eagles and Rams-Seahawks to Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Giants-Cowboys game won’t be moved, though. It is on...
Getty Bruce Arians has been dealing with an inflamed Achilles. Bruce Arians left no doubt on his plans for where he will coach on Sunday, Dec. 12, against the Buffalo Bills despite recovery from an Achilles inflammation. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach confirmed on Friday, Dec. 10, that he will coach from the sidelines against the Bills. Arians will wear a boot and have a scooter, Greg Auman of The Athletic reported. “Oh yeah, I’ll be there. Pissed off, but I’ll be there,” Arians told the media on Friday. SAN FRANCISCO — Andrew Wiggins and his coach, Steve Kerr, were both able to admit after avenging their loss to the Suns that Golden State’s newly aggressive wing wasn’t at his full capacity in their first meeting earlier this week. At full health Friday, Wiggins showed what he is capable of with 19 points while shadowing Chris Paul on defense in the Warriors’ 118-96 win Friday, evening the season series with the Warriors’ top competition in the West after a loss Tuesday in the desert. Back spasms bothered him the morning of their first clash, and he turned in his quietest performance since his awakening against Minnesota. “I thought Wiggs was fantastic defensively, just setting a tone on Chris right away, hounding him everywhere he went,” coach Steve Kerr said. “And also contributing offensively the way he did, I thought Wiggs had a great game.” Wiggins said he felt far better Friday. It showed. With Devin Booker out, Wiggins took on the task of guarding Paul, the Suns’ slippery point guard, often picking him up at...
LeBron James tested positive for COVID on Tuesday but the Lakers star has since cleared protocols and will return to the team on Friday.  LeBron James sent shockwaves through the NBA when, ahead of the Lakers‘ game on Tuesday against the Kings, it was announced the superstar had tested positive for COVID-19 and could be out for an extended period. As it turns out, James truly is built different — or, rather, the positive test might not have been an actual positive test. On Thursday, The Athletic’s Shams Charania reported that LeBron had cleared the NBA’s COVID protocols with multiple negative tests and would return to the Lakers on Friday for their game against the Clippers.
