The Fairfax County, Virginia, Department of Transportation is shaping a new transit development plan and reviewing routes for the Fairfax Connector bus as it looks for ways to improve service. The county held a virtual community meeting Monday night to examine its preferred plan for possible changes on the routes that travel through the Franconia and Springfield areas. Four areas of concern were identified, including connectivity, faster travel, a greater span of service and increased frequency. “Are we matching up with the way people are traveling, where they want to go … we have to make sure that our routes are always getting people where they need to go,” said Planning Section Chief Michael Felschow.  To improve service, the Connector can increase its hours or days of operation. Another idea was increasing the number of times a bus comes by a particular stop.  Felschow said achieving faster travel times might mean re-directing buses from some neighborhoods. Nine bus routes in the Franconia-Springfield area are under consideration as part of the preferred plan. Officials are asking the public to take part...
COVID-19 robbed us of the Chamber Music Society of Minnesota’s June 14 concert with Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Caroline Shaw, along with its fall 2020 season. Instead, “in the wake of the loss of George Floyd and much unrest in our beloved Twin Cities,” the esteemed CMSM has created a special presentation that will premiere this weekend. On Sunday (Sept. 27) at 4 p.m., the time when its resident artists and guests would normally perform live in Hamline’s Sundin Hall, CMSM will present a new multimedia work for solo violin and spoken word called “How Many Breaths? In Memory of George Floyd and Countless Others.” Created by CMSM’s co-artistic director and violinist Ariana Kim, Penumbra’s Lou Bellamy and Sarah Bellamy and composer Steve Heitzeg, produced in collaboration with Walker West Music Academy, “How Many Breaths?” will include original music by Heitzeg, original text by Sarah Bellamy and narration by Lou and Sarah, combined with images and video of street art and demonstration footage from around the Twin Cities. MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — If you’ve ever driven by Franconia Sculpture Park in Chisago County, there’s a good chance you did a double take. From the educational to the entertaining, some of the pieces are 40 feet tall. But most people don’t know how all of it got started. In this week’s Finding Minnesota, John Lauritsen shows us why the park is having its busiest year on record. Chisago County is known for its scenery. Nature provided much of it…. artists did the rest. “A few artists had an idea,” said Ginger Shulick Porcella, executive director. “They wanted to have an outdoor laboratory to make large-scale artwork.” That was 1996. As Franconia Sculpture Park approaches its 25th anniversary, it has grown in every sense of the word. There are 120 sculptures here on more than 40 acres of land. They come in all shapes and sizes- tall, short, hard to miss, and hidden away. “A lot of sculpture parks are sort of perfectly manicured landscapes with art plopped into them. Here, it’s more of a discovery,”...
