Live from Music Row Friday morning on The Tennessee Star Report with Michael Patrick Leahy – broadcast on Nashville’s Talk Radio 98.3 and 1510 WLAC weekdays from 5:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. – host Leahy welcomed Katie Everett, press secretary for Concerned Women for America to the newsmaker line to talk about the recent vandalism at its Alexandria, Virginia offices and their continued mission to fight for the unborn and women.
Leahy: We are joined on our newsmaker line right now by the Press Secretary for the Concerned Women for America, Katie Everett. Good morning, Katie.
Everett: Good morning, Michael. Thanks for having me.
Leahy: So there was a story reported, as far as I can tell, only at Fox News. I can’t find it reported anywhere else but Concerned Women for America, your offices are in Northern Virginia after the leak of the draft majority opinion on the Dobbs case in the Supreme Court, which would, in essence, overturn Roe v. Wade were apparently vandalized in this past Saturday. And as far as I can tell, there’s been very little done to find this fellow. What’s the story?
Everett: Sure. Last Saturday night, pro-abortion activists came to our offices. Our headquarters are right across the river from D.C. in Alexandria and broke our security system. Urinated all over our front door had been pretty violent, and he has previously harassed our staff verbally.
And so after this leak, life is winning and it is just driving the Left to a tantrum. We have reported the police report and we have also reported a hate crime to the FBI, and we hope that they will investigate it as such.
Leahy: There’s a video of this guy vandalizing your offices. I didn’t know about the guy urinating on the front door. Yikes! This is a weird person.
Everett: Yes, we see this. This isn’t just an attack on Concerned Women for America. We are seeing these across the country. I know you’ve probably reported on the Wisconsin pro-life center and pro-life centers, pregnancy care centers around the country are just being attacked right now.
And we are a movement full of compassion and love. We don’t just want to save the baby. We want to help the women. And so these attacks are, like I said, just tantrums from the Left because life is winning.
And we are excited to hopefully overturn Roe v. Wade. And that doesn’t mean the end of abortion, but we are ready to fight for that in every state.
Leahy: The U.S. attorney for the Eastern Virginia District has an office in Alexandria, probably less than a mile or so away from your offices.
Have you heard from the U.S. attorney for Eastern Virginia? I think her name is Jessica Aber. She was confirmed back in the fall. Will she be prosecuting this fellow?
Everett: We’re not sure yet. We haven’t heard anything, but we are following up and we will continue to push forward and support life as we wait for an answer. The Alexandria Police Department is currently investigating, and it’s a current open investigation.
Leahy: But you know who this guy is, right?
Everett: He has previously harassed us. We don’t have a lot of information, but we do know he lives around the area of our office and we’ve seen him pretty often. And so hopefully they catch him.
Leahy: Do you all know his name?
Everett: No, we do not.
Leahy: Really? It shouldn’t be that hard to figure out his name. For the FBI, the Alexandra Police, they don’t seem to be pursuing this with a great deal of vigor.
Everett: No. No, it’s not January 6. He looked directly at the camera, so we should have the footage that we need for them to be able to find him and prosecute him. But we’re just not sure that they have that yet.
Leahy: This went to the Alexandria Police Department?
Leahy: This happened Saturday. Is that right? Saturday evening?
Everett: Yes. Nobody was there, thank the Lord.
Leahy: This has almost been a week, almost a week since you filed the report and the Alexandria Police Department hasn’t done anything or communicated anything to you on this. How have they handled these kinds of issues before?
Everett: Sure. We reported one of the first times that he harassed our staff and they came to our office and asked questions.
We have noticed a little bit more of a police presence in the area. So I think that they’re trying to catch him again. But it has been a little while since we made that report.
Leahy: How many people work at these offices?
Everett: About 20. We have about 20 in our national office. And then we have people in the grassroots around the country.
Leahy: Tell us a little bit about the mission of Concerned Women for America.
Everett: So we are a Christian nonprofit. We’re the largest public policy women’s organization. One of our core issues is life. And as you know, we are being targeted because we are unapologetically pro-life and we have been for about 45 years.
We fight for that on the state level. Like I said, we’re ready to do that if Roe actually is overturned. But we lobby for Christian values and public policy.
And so we are just really looking forward to this decision being released. And we hope that they do it sooner rather than later just to curb these attacks and to keep the justices safe.
Leahy: Are there any other instances where Concerned Women for America, either in your offices or individually as you’re out and about doing your daily work where you’ve been subjected to these kinds of attacks?
Everett: Of course, for our beliefs. We’re conservative Christians and through the years, we’ve done bus tours in support of Amy Coney-Barrett and Justice Kavanaugh.
And during that time, it was very hot, honestly, at the rallies and we had things said to us and we were harassed, but it’s really escalated. I think the issue of abortion and because of the Dobbs leak, really has escalated. And I think just because they know that they can’t win and life is winning.
Leahy: Are you concerned about your own personal safety in this environment?
Everett: You know, it is a little bit scary to think that somebody is targeting our office when we’re just trying to go to work and do what the Lord is calling us to do.
But that won’t stop us from fighting for life. We’ve done it for 45 years. Like I said, I’ve been in the movement since I was a little girl. And I will continue to do the right thing. So we’re not going to stop.
