Getty Rookie New York Jets wide receiver Elijah Moore making a move in the middle of a contest versus the Cincinnati Bengals.

The New York Jets have been the laughing stock of the NFL for the last decade.

The things that have transpired so far in 2021 have mostly just added to the punchline.

One of the craziest things so far has been the wild quarterback carousel.

Four different quarterbacks through the first 10 games of the season have gotten some action for the green and white:

  • Zach Wilson: six games played, four touchdowns to nine interceptions, and has attempted 181 passes.
  • Mike White: four games played, five touchdowns to eight picks, and has attempted 132 passes.
  • Joe Flacco:  two games played, three touchdowns to zero interceptions, and has attempted 42 passes.
  • Josh Johnson: two games played, three touchdowns to one interception, and has attempted 45 passes.

While some may crack jokes at that fun fact, one Jets player sees it as a major positive.

On the Flight Deck podcast with Rich Cimini, rookie receiver Elijah Moore saw a silver lining in the crazy volatility of the quarterback room:

“A lot of people probably look at it as a negative, but I look at it as a positive. You know if you can do it with anybody then you really can’t be stopped. It is just giving me more confidence that it doesn’t matter who is in there.”

There has always been the age old question, does the quarterback make the receiver or does the receiver make the quarterback?

If we are going to base that off of an incredibly small sample size in the middle of a rookie season, it doesn’t look like there is much debate.

Moore has excelled regardless of who has had to trot out at quarterback for the Jets.

In nine games played, the former Ole Miss stud has simply produced. He has 33 receptions for 415 yards and five total touchdowns.

That is especially true as of late.

Since Week 8, Moore is seventh in the NFL in receiving yardage (336) and is second in the league in touchdowns during that time span with four, per DJ Bien-Aime of the New York Daily News.

While Moore has proven he can do it with any quarterback tossing him the pigskin, which is incredibly impressive, obviously he has the best chance to put up the best numbers with his star rookie passer.

“Man I can’t wait for Wilson to be back,” Moore told Cimini on the Flight Deck podcast. “Zach being healthy is something everyone in the facility wants. He brings more of a joy and a smile to him playing in the games out there with his brothers.”

The former BYU stud is set to return after missing the last four games with a PCL strain. While Moore didn’t play at all during the preseason due to a quad injury, the tales I was told by people in attendance at Jets practices this summer were legendary.

There was a palpable energy and connection between the two rookies and their chemistry was electric. For a variety of reasons that wasn’t able to be manifested early in the season: playcalling and injuries.

Although all of that is in the past, right now the arrow is pointing in the right direction for both players.

Wilson was able to sit and learn how this offense is supposed to operate. While Moore has continued to gain confidence and that is making him more and more dangerous to cover.

Obviously no one is satisfied with the abysmal record to date, but something Jets fans can hang their hats on is the youth and talent at several key positions.

It has been a long time since the green and white has had a tantalizing combination like this on offense.

Latest in Raiders Coaching Search Could Impact Jets Bitter Rival

Getty New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels on November 18, 2021.

Just last week on January 22, we spoke about how a Brian Daboll hire could help the New York Jets. The coveted offensive mind was the major architect of the offense that developed Josh Allen and his potential departure would theoretically hurt the Buffalo Bills.

In turn, this would benefit the Jets, an AFC East franchise with championship aspirations under Robert Saleh — no matter how lofty a goal that may seem after the past decade.

This week, another head coaching search has taken a dramatic turn in Gang Green’s favor. It’s happened in Las Vegas with the Raiders, and the ripple effects could affect a different divisional rival.

Raiders Target Patriots Future After Belichick

Back on January 17, NFL insider Adam Schefter noted that the Raiders were interviewing New England Patriots linebacker coach Jerod Mayo for their HC job. Not only that, they’d be taking a look at Bill Belichick’s director of player personnel — Dave Ziegler — for their GM job.

Raiders still have HC Rich Bisaccia and GM Mike Mayock in place, but it hasn’t stopped Las Vegas from looking.

A short time later, acting GM Mike Mayock was fired in Vegas and Ziegler became a hot candidate to replace him. Not only that, a new name from the Pats tree caught fire within the Raiders head coaching search and it wasn’t Mayo.

Austin Boyd of Heavy on Raiders reported: “If [Ziegler] does end up getting the job, there’s a strong chance they’re targeting Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.”

On January 27, that Patriots rumor became a reality as Schefter and other NFL insiders announced a key Raiders development on Friday the 28th.

Raiders requested today a head coach interview with Patriots' offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, per league source. McDaniels now expected to interview with the Raiders.

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) January 27, 2022

“Raiders requested today a head coach interview with Patriots’ offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, per league source. McDaniels now expected to interview with the Raiders,” he tweeted.

The Pats’ long-time OC has not received an HC look ever since he left the Indianapolis Colts at the alter in 2018, despite coaching Mac Jones to an All-Rookie Team honor in 2021.

The thought around the league was that McDaniels spurned Indy to eventually take over for Belichick in New England. All of a sudden, that may not be the case.

Believe It, It’s Real

Following the interview news, Ian Rapoport added: “Raiders owner Mark Davis has had interest in Josh McDaniels for weeks. Hard to imagine he puts in the request without believing McDaniels would take the job. This all gets real tomorrow.”

Pats fans have not always appreciated McDaniels but the New England offense has been incredibly efficient under his guidance. In 2021, the Patriots ranked sixth in points per game and 15th in yards per game.

Both those marks were first for a team starting a rookie quarterback. Not only that, other franchises that started a first-year signal-caller 10 games or more all ranked 27th or lower in points and 24th or lower in yards.

In other words, either McDaniels’ system was tremendous for Jones in 2021, or we really are witnessing the second-coming of Tom Brady. I’ll bet on the former.

Schefter followed up: “If the Raiders and Josh McDaniels get a deal done to make him the next Las Vegas HC, a potential OC replacement in New England could be former Patriots’ assistant Bill O’Brien.”

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) January 27, 2022

The former Houston Texans HC comes from the New England coaching tree and a reunion could patch things up for Belichick if McDaniels does decide to leave.

Even so, any sort of offensive transition could make year two more difficult on Jones. It also changes the contingency plan for whenever Belichick calls it quits.

McDaniels was 11-17 as a head coach with the Denver Broncos from 2009-10. He has been extremely patient in pursuing his second opportunity as an HC.
